I think - The amount of each news item is about right. In my case, it tells enough of what I want to hear and enough to tell me what it is about and then one can always looks for more. Glad you put business second and not behind sports as many do I noted that when I had clicked on it two separate times, that the news top story was different so .. clearly this page is dynamic. Very nice. And no, I dont know how to do that in html myself. I could only do a static page Front page does have a pull-in module for MSN news. But, your page is much nicer than the Front page kind. I briefly put the front page news stuff on my site, and then removed it. I didnt like the format. Clearly MS Front Page was being nice to MSN. what a surprise You going to do stock quotes also? At least the major exchanges? Dow Jones, Nasdaq, New York? Of course you can say no. Then the next question is "will you allow your users to personalize this?" See the problem? Even faced with something great users ask for more. Next we will be asking for daily jokes on the page also. I would think if one looked at My Yahoo, definitely news is their big item, then stocks, then weather, then jokes, then horoscope. But then again the my yahoo calendar will even let people personalize and give them notes on important birth days and stuff. Not sure how far you wanted to go with this page. News is definitely the top item though, I agree. The "search news" text box though didnt seem to work. Either that or I dont know how to use it. I typed in Motorola, and got nothing. That was odd since Motorola usually has maybe 5 stories a day or so. Then I typed in Iraq and got nothing - that was even odder. Then I typed in EMI which had a story right on the screen, and it found nothing. I figured then that that feature was not active yet. Interesting that you had health news. :) Looks like a great page. You seem to be right up there in a class with "my yahoo" in my book. I think it is already better than AOL's page.

thanks for asking me!

I hope I didnt wear out my welcome

That's quite a web site/portal. Congratulations! It looks ok.  I'd make the news article title a bit larger than the text. Yes. It's much better to see immediately what each icon stands for. I'm seeing stuff in there that I haven't seen before. Nice work.

Hi Jean-Pierre,

Nice job on your web portal. It must have been ENORMOUS amount of work! I like the graphics at the top of the page. The weather section worked fine for Seattle including the search feature. One comment is that it is impossible to be able to cover all areas of interest very well. You might try to sell a specialized version of a search engine, I.E. Medical, and in areas that not all the other search engines cover well.

Good overall visual - clean - easy to use - good search engine. Since the icons on the not are not (and cannot be) fully self-explanatory, I wish whey would either be subtitled (not clean) or at least show what they represent when you pass your cursor over them. White space is vital. However, my browser (AOL) show a bit too much white space left and right.

Amazing. Was that bar at the top there yesterday, and I just missed it?

Not sure how you did all of this on small resources. It seems to compete well with the big guys.

Competition

  • · It definitely beats the MSN things that come with Front Page
  • · It beats AOL . Of course I would agree that AOL is big on hype to get new people but low on services after they arrive.
  • · It is up there with "my yahoo" .. I have not decided which of you win yet, yahoo or you. But you are in that class with "my yahoo" which I previously would have given the best award to. "My yahoo" allows several personalized city temperatures to read out. You do have the whole country map though, which I think might be even better. I think their cartoons are a little bit better - but then again, I think your news portayal is better.
  • · It beats infogate. I was an infogate fan for the longest time - until it was no longer free. One thing that I will always credit infogate with, though, is that it also had some of the best links in the world that it recommended. I remember it was the first place that told me about flight tracker - and I was unbelievably impressed. Now I always use flightracker http://www.cheaptickets.com/trs/cheaptickets/flighttracker/flight_tracker_home.xsl now hosted by cheap tickets, who also should be known as pop-ups-r-us. I use it to track anyone flying into the airport to see us so I know when to start driving. Perhaps some key helpful hints like that one, mapquest or yahoo maps, ask jeeves, and also some of the following might be helpful "reference links":

http://www.infoplease.com/ - dictionary almanac encylocpedia

http://www.infoplease.com/ - French, Spanish, German, Italian Dictionaries

http://www.time.gov/ - official US time

anyway, those and perhaps also the white pages, yellow pages, people search - might all be quite helpful as hany "reference links" Other than that - looks super. I have no idea how you have the power to put something that powerful together so fast. It is indeed impressive. Whether or not we decide that you are best or my yahoo is best, the fact that you can compete well with the previous best is pretty phenominal. My guess would be that yahoo has more people on staff. :)

Oh yes, the movies seem old - but I guess you would know that. There are a few places that you beat out even the mighty "my yahoo". I think one is your movies. The second is that you dont attempt to show top DVD sales - my yahoo's always looks wrong. Your news format is better in that you show more of the headline news. Your stock format is nice. I like that it shows graphs without being asked.

Your directory by the way looks either like DMOZ or google - not sure which - but it sure looks familiar.

Oh one more thing - which may be asking too much. One thing I did like about infogate and then my yahoo - is that they allowed you to personally track top news stories for 3 or so companies quite easily. So, on "my yahoo" page, I track Motorola and Novatel Wireless whom I used to work for, plus EDS whom my son works for. At times I also tracked key company competitors. Some may find that feature of getting the top stories easily for their firms a big deal. Many times I have seen the top stories on some companies, and then mailed them to one or more CEOs in San Diego that I know - and then gotten a good thank you from them for keeping them informed. But of course, please keep in mind that you are already exceeding what anyone could ask for. And also you might recognize that a guy like me keeps asking.

An amazing job, Jean Pierre!

take care

Very nice. I took a little tour. Great front page. I guess the key is to get people to pay for adds on this site or?

Gary.

Looking good. I like the titles to the icons. Good overall visual - clean - easy to use - good search engine. White space is vital. However, my browser (AOL) show a bit too much white space left and right.

JP,

It is really cool. I like the icons under the main banner. The only thing I'd wish is if you'd have a menu stay on the left while the content scrolls. I believe you may use frames for that, but I also know that many people don't like them and they take longer to load. Other than that looks really good.

Wow, a very in-depth project, good, clean interface -- wish I had more time to critique

Keep up the good work!

Jean Pierre,

You certainly have put a ton of information on the portal. It looks nice. Clean and pretty user friendly.

From whatever I accessed, I can tell, the weather page looks good. If I were you, I would try to change the font if possible. Also in the fronline news page I didn't like the drag-down bar on the right had side of the news. I think that is redundent because your browser already provides one. I like your icons. Hope you take it as a constructive criticism..

Jean-Pierre,

I think that the news portal is good; I use yahoo and some others for this, although a bit slow for my 45kbps connection.

Hi JP,

I really like the look and organization of the portal. Very clean and the colors are vivid and pleasing. I had fun browsing through some of the categories. As I was browsing through some of the categories, the one thing that I thought would be useful is the ability to search within each category. Maybe you have not had a chance to add that functionality yet, since I see that you have it in some of the categories. The only other thing that I noticed is that when I select a topic, I sometimes find myself at the bottom of the topic instead of the top, so I have to scroll up before I can start reading. If you have the ability to control that, you might want to consider making that change.

I like the design. Good luck with your clients.

Looked at your web site again and based on my unprofessional opinion I thought it was very good. Sorry but that's al the critique that I can give on any web see.

Very cool JP!  You really did a nice job on this. I would like to see Quicktime trailers on the movie page.
