Airborne
Laser (ABL) ABL delivers surgical, high-payoff, boost -phase destruction of multiple theater ballistic missiles launched from random, dispersed sites at long ranges while remaining within friendly airspace. Post-kill debris lands well short of the intended target, preferably on enemy territory, when missiles are taken down during this vulnerable boost phase of flight. A high-energy laser and beam control system, the ABL is integrated into a 747-400F aircraft capable of operating at high altitudes for extended periods of time. A partnership of Boeing, TRW and Lockheed Martin, collectively called Team ABL, is taking on the challenge of this revolutionary system. Boeing is responsible for overall system design and integration, and aircraft modification, as well as the Battle Management, Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (BMC4I) for this extraordinary missile defense system. The first full-up demonstration is expected in 2002. | |
