| CH-47D
The CH-47D Modernization Program was designed to extend the life, increase the operational capabilities and lower operating costs of the U.S. Army's large transport helicopter fleet. The upgraded tandem-rotor copter is like new for about half the operating cost of early model Chinooks, offering improved lift capabilities, reliability, availability, and maintainability. Modernization and other upgrades also improved the safety of Chinook flight, since the majority of missions are flown at low levels and at night. Operated by a crew of two, the Chinook can accommodate 33 passengers or two jeep-sized vehicles or a 105-millimeter howitzer and its crew. The CH-47D has a more powerful twin-turbine, tandem-rotor engines and transmissions, all-fiberglass rotor blades, a modularized hydraulic system and external cargo hooks for handling single- or dual-point loads or three individual loads simultaneously. | |
